Passing a nightclub called the Body Double and crossing 30th Street, I cut through steam which hissed and writhed from manhole covers, masking dull black streets and shadowed buildings. Stepping onto the curb, I avoided a rat the size of my forearm and threaded my way past derelicts lounging in the trash heaps and boarded-up doorways.
